Businesses aren’t confident with their cyber-security – Chamber lunch

During February’s Sure-sponsored Jersey Chamber of Commerce lunch, Mimecast’s Senior Sales Engineer and Security Researcher, Gareth Kitson, presented research showing that only 25% of businesses are confident with their cyber-security.

The research found that internal threats are a growing security weak spot for organisations worldwide. Mr Kitson revealed that 92% of data hacks start with an email with 31% of organisations admitting an employee at board level had previously sent sensitive information to the wrong person.

“Human error is a fact of life and the workplace is often a dynamic environment where things happen quickly,” said Mr Kitson. “We try and train people to pause, take a breath and think about what they’re clicking. This is one of the simplest ways to increase safety online.

“With training and common sense a business can reduce its chance of becoming the victim of a cyber attack.”

Sure is partnered with Mimecast to offer offshore cybersecurity solutions to businesses in the Channel Islands and Isle of Man.

Kenny-Lee Holberry, Head of Enterprise Sales at Sure in Jersey, said: “The most damaging hacks of recent times have been the result of someone clicking on a link or opening an attachment within an email; something many of us do tens, perhaps hundreds, of times a day.

“We’re proud to be partnered with Mimecast to protect local businesses from cyber threats. But these threats aren’t going away so the best thing businesses can do is to make sure your organisation is taking them seriously, train staff appropriately and create a suitable cyber-security policy.”
