The Jersey edition of the de Putron Challenge took place on Tuesday at The Royal Jersey Showground.
This was the second of the two island challenges to take place, where Year Six and Year Eight students from all Jersey schools competed against each other in a knowledge-based quiz competition. The winners from this event will get the chance to go head-to-head in the inter-island final against their winning Guernsey school counterparts, Elizabeth College Junior School (Y6) and Les Beaucamps High School (Y8) on the 24th March here in Jersey.
The de Putron Challenge puts to the test the brightest young minds in Guernsey and Jersey. The Challenge brings together Year Six and Year Eight pupils to compete and test their general knowledge, maths and creative thinking skills.
St Mary’s Primary School took home the top prize in the Year Six competition with 9 points. St Luke’s School came in a close second, only 1 point behind.
The other schools that made it through the heats to the final were Plat Douet Primary School, St Michael’s Preparatory School, Rouge Bouillon School and Jersey College Preparatory School.

After closely contested rounds in the two Year Eight heats, St Michael’s Preparatory School, Les Quennevais School, Haute Vallee School and Victoria College made it through the initial heats. The final had everyone on the edge of their seats in every round. But in the end, the winning school was Victoria College with 20 points, followed by Haute Vallee School with 16 points after a nail-biting tie-break question against St Michael’s Preparatory School for second place.
Every student who took part received a book voucher reward so they can continue investing in their intelligence and expanding their knowledge. The teams that came in first and second place took away cash prizes of £450 and £175 for their respective schools.
The Jersey Year Six winners, St Mary’s Primary School, will go on to compete with the Guernsey Year Six winners, Elizabeth College, at the inter-island final. The Jersey Year Eight winners, Victoria College, will similarly go on to compete against the Guernsey Year Eight winners, Les Beaucamps High School. This event will be held in Jersey at Jersey Museum on Tuesday, 24th March. This offers the winning Guernsey schools the opportunity to travel to Jersey to meet their Jersey counterparts.
Hayley de Putron, a trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation and founder of the de Putron Challenge, said: “Congratulations to St Mary’s Primary School and Victoria College for winning the challenges in their respective year groups. Every year, I am astounded by the depth of knowledge and creative thinking displayed by our young islanders, and I’m pleased to say that every team gave their all yesterday in what was an exhilarating and enjoyable day.”
