Mourant makes a splash with snorkel donation to St Helier school children

Mourant has donated snorkel sets to more than 100 children in two local primary schools.

The snorkel sets were gifted to children in D’Auvergne Year 5 (three classes, totalling 77 children) and First Tower Year 5 (two classes, totalling 40 children), to encourage them to engage directly with Jersey’s unique marine environment outside of Blue Marine’s snorkel training.

The donation marks five years of Mourant’s support of Blue Marine Foundation, particularly its education outreach programme, which is delivered on an annual basis to Jersey primary schools in Years 5 and 6. Mourant also helped finance the launch of the Blue Marine Snorkel Trail, a self-guided underwater trail created to connect people with marine life, featuring marked spots in Portelet and Bouley Bay for people to explore Jersey’s diverse marine habitats.

The education programme and snorkel trail combines underwater exploration with marine education and science, aiming to cultivate an appreciation for biodiversity and the importance of protecting fragile habitats.

Daniel Birtwistle, Jersey Managing Partner at Mourant, said: “Our continued support for Blue Marine over the last five years emphasises why the Mourant Ocean Pledge is so important – it’s about an ongoing commitment to empowering the next generation through education and engagement. We hope that the donation of this snorkel equipment will allow pupils to reinforce the knowledge and skills gained through Blue Marine’s education sessions, supporting learning, confidence and enjoyment both in and out the water.”

Freddie Watson, Channel Islands Project Manager at Blue Marine Foundation, said: “We are delighted to have Mourant’s continued support for the snorkel trail education programme in Jersey. Over the years, we have been able to reach over 1,000 primary school children through this education programme, which has been fundamental in inspiring the next generation of ocean stewards.

“Mourant’s commitment enables us to build on this, allowing even more young children to discover and connect with the incredible marine environment here in Jersey. It’s been a few years since D’Auvergne and First Tower had the opportunity to take part in the education programme, so we are especially excited to welcome pupils back to the programme this summer, where they will explore the ocean with their very own masks and snorkels.”
