Staying active is one of the most important things we can do to maintain our health and independence as we age.
That’s why the Health Improvement Commission is bringing a new, evidence-based programme to Guernsey to help older adults move more and live well.
REACT (REtirement in ACTion) is a free, year-long group exercise programme designed for people aged 65 and over who are starting to notice changes in their mobility, and may be finding daily tasks like getting out of a chair or climbing stairs more challenging. It combines strength, balance and mobility exercises with friendly group sessions, education on healthy ageing, and support to build confidence and motivation to stay active.
“We know that physical activity is one of the most powerful tools we have to support healthy ageing,” said Sam Green, Adult Physical Activity Officer at the Health Improvement Commission.
“REACT is a fantastic opportunity for older adults in Guernsey to improve their mobility, stay independent, and connect with others in a supportive environment.”
Developed by leading UK universities and community partners, REACT has been shown to prevent mobility decline, improve and maintain physical function, and deliver these benefits in a cost-effective way. The programme is now being expanded to Guernsey thanks to funding from the Guernsey Community Foundation.
“I’m absolutely delighted to see REACT’s strong expansion journey now reaching Guernsey” said Afroditi Stathi, Professor of Physical Activity and Community Health, at the University of Birmingham and REACT Chief Investigator. “This milestone means more older adults can access a proven, life-changing programme that helps them stay mobile, independent, and connected – strengthening community ties across the island.”
