The Island of Sark has marked a historic milestone with the successful launch of its first official postage stamps, issued under the postal administration of Guernsey Post.
Sark is the first island to introduce Great Britain stamps in more than 40 years, since Alderney’s debut in 1983.
The first issue, released on 27th August 2025, reflected the island’s wartime experiences and its enduring spirit. Four stamps illustrated moments from the German Occupation during World War II and another four commemorate the island’s 80th anniversary of Liberation, celebrated earlier this year.
Islanders, visitors, and collectors alike were drawn to the issue, which featured scenes including Dame Sibyl Hathaway – remembered for her leadership during the Occupation – and the symbolic departure of German forces from Sark in May 1945.
A second issue, launched on 3rd September 2025, celebrated Sark’s unique natural beauty with a definitive series featuring the island’s wildflowers. Home to more than 600 species, Sark is a sanctuary for flora such as the early-blooming Lesser Celandine, the vivid Bluebells, and the rare Sand Crocus. The collection also highlighted the Rock Sea-Lavender, which grows only on Sark’s cliffs and nowhere else in the world.
Bridget Yabsley, Head of Philatelic at Guernsey Post, said: “The launch of Sark’s first stamps is a proud moment for the island’s community. These issues tell Sark’s story – from resilience during wartime to the extraordinary natural environment that makes the island so special. We are honoured to share this heritage with people in Sark and beyond.”
