Guernsey Retail Group launches business climate survey to inform new retail strategy

The future of Guernsey’s retail sector is in the spotlight as the Guernsey Retail Group is urging all local retailers to take part in a major Guernsey Retailer Climate Survey.

The survey is designed to capture today’s challenges and tomorrow’s opportunities, which will inform the creation of a new Retail Strategy for Guernsey.

The survey aims to gather data to accurately gauge trading conditions and business confidence across the sector and identify key challenges and opportunities facing local retailers. The responses will help the GRG represent the sector effectively in discussions with government, on critical issues such as the proposed introduction of a Goods and Services Tax (GST).

Malcolm Woodhams, GRG Director, said: “Our local industry forms a significant part of Island life, employs more than 3,500 people and as the fifth highest contributor by sector, makes a substantial contribution to our community and economy. This survey will provide us with necessary data on the sector’s current state and for collecting information directly from retailers of all sizes on their current health and challenges.”

This latest initiative follows a major island-wide questionnaire launched by the GRG in 2024 aimed at residents and sought their opinions on a range of topics relating to Town and the Island’s other community and shopping areas. The information gathered is critical in ensuring that the sector meets the changing needs and expectations of Islanders and visitors.

Mr. Woodhams appealed to all local retailers to complete the survey: “This is the opportunity to share and have their voice heard. The more responses we receive, the stronger and more representative our case will be when engaging with government and other stakeholders. Crucially, it will also give us the insight we need regarding concerns or opportunities relevant to all.”
