Jersey’s Atlantic Hotel and Ocean Restaurant has retained its Silver Certification for the second year as a member of EarthCheck.

EarthCheck is a business advisory group specialising in sustainability and destination management for the travel and tourism industry.

This award marks another milestone in the hotel’s ongoing commitment to sustainable practices. The Atlantic remains the only hotel in the Channel Islands and one of the first ten hotels in the British Isles to achieve silver certification with EarthCheck.

Patrick Burke, Owner and Managing Director, shared: “Retaining our Silver Certification is an immense achievement by our team. Our continued efforts to build a sustainable future for The Atlantic Hotel have been a priority for us for some time, and this certification is the result of our commitment to improving every aspect of our operations. We are grateful for the hard work and support of local sustainability expert Sheena Brockie, as well as the thorough evaluation carried out by the EarthCheck auditor to ensure we continue to make meaningful progress.

“Our island’s environmental and cultural assets are central to attracting visitors to Jersey, and we must ensure they are protected for future generations. We recognise the significant role Jersey’s visitor economy plays in this area, and we’re proud to continue driving positive change in our industry.”

In 2024, The Atlantic Hotel raised an impressive £7,095 for Durrell’s Rewild Carbon programme, which supports rewilding projects such as those in Brazil’s Atlantic Rain Forest. With a cost of £29.35 to balance one tonne of carbon, this equates to balancing 241 tonnes of carbon emissions. Guests played a vital role in this achievement by contributing to the programme during their stay.

The hotel also undertook several impactful sustainability initiatives last year. Guest rooms were transitioned to the sustainable Molton Brown Signature Dispenser system, replacing single-use plastic bottles. This initiative alone prevents thousands of plastic bottles from going to waste each year. In Ocean Restaurant, rechargeable lamps replaced traditional candles, eliminating over 620 kilograms of wax waste annually. UV-reflective window film was installed to mitigate heat build up during the summer months, reducing energy usage and protecting furnishings from UV damage.

Stewart Moore, CEO and Founder of EarthCheck, commented: “The Atlantic Hotel’s commitment to responsible tourism is a testament to how luxury and sustainability can go hand in hand. Their ongoing efforts in waste reduction, water conservation, and local sourcing set a benchmark for sustainable hospitality in the region.”
