The first event in the IoD’s Winter Seminar Series will focus on innovation in Guernsey. A panel of legal, regulatory and technology experts will discuss the nature of innovation, sharing a broad range of views, from local entrepreneurs to Guernsey’s regulator.
The panel comprises Emma Bailey, Director of the Guernsey Financial Services Commission Authorisations and Innovation Division; Wayne Atkinson, Partner at Collas Crill and Susie Crowder, non-executive chairman at Nexus Technology Ltd and the CEO of Bright Futures LBG.
Matt Thornton, co-founder of the Guernsey-based tech and innovation consultancy, Cortex Technologies completes the panel which will be moderated by Iain Beresford, IoD committee member and event organiser.
Together the panel will share their experience and knowledge of how innovation and technological disruption has impacted every industry and every economy around the world – including Guernsey.
They will also consider the implications this has for boards especially when, as highlighted in a recent Deloitte report, many boards still “look like they did 20 years ago” and, as such, will find making informed business and strategy decisions in this disruptive and digital world challenging.
Boards in Guernsey are facing many such challenges and the panel will discuss: are boards at a crossroads? Is a board without a majority of tech-savvy and innovation-aware directors capable of recognising, let alone taking advantage, of the opportunities available.
The panel will also discuss role policymakers and regulators should play in innovation. Can they be drivers of change by creating an environment to cultivate and promote innovation, and potentially deliver innovations to the marketplace in a way in which could not have developed on its own? Or does innovation and technological disruption provide an unwanted challenge to the regulatory status quo?
The event, which takes place on 16 November at the OGH, is sponsored by JT and is open to IoD members and non-members.
