TV station, supermarket and airport praised for disability awareness

ITV News reporter John Fernandez, the Channel Islands Co-operative Society and Guernsey Airport are among those being honoured for the work they’re doing to improve the lives of disabled islanders.

The charity We All Matter Eh publicly praised a dozen groups, companies and individuals for the work they’ve put in as part of a ‘think differently about disability’ campaign.

Matter-ITV.jpgITV News has chosen the charity Access For All as its charity of the year, meaning it gets regular TV coverage of its work in the community. Reporter John Fernandez was singled out for his personal support.

The Co-op staged its first autism hour last month, creating an especially quiet environment to allow people with the condition, and their families and carers, a much more positive shopping experience.

Matter-Lanyard.jpgWhile Guernsey Airport has launched a scheme where passengers and visitors with hidden disabilities can wear a special lanyard around their neck to alert staff to the fact they may need additional time and support while at the airport. Staff there are undergoing training to help make it a success.

Those who have done something to help people with disabilities as part of its Make A Change campaign were thanked at a ceremony in Guernsey’s Inner Market.
