A group of swimmers from Guernsey Electricity Ltd (GEL) and friends successfully took on the challenge of swimming across the Little Russel to raise funds for the RNLI.

Under the team name of ‘GEL’Ly Fish’, the team of recreational swimmers successfully swum the 5km from the north side of St Sampson’s to Harbour Beach in Herm in under 1hr 40 minutes.

Sponsorship has been matched by their employer Guernsey Electricity to bring their total donation to over £1200.

Swimmer and Head of Risk & Compliance at Guernsey Electricity Rob Winter said: “Thanks to everyone who made the day a success – we relied on friends, family and colleagues for sea faring knowledge, kayaking skills and support boats and we all made it across safely thanks to their help. It’s such a great achievement and we are delighted to have raised funds for the RNLI.”

The event was organised by Guernsey Electricity employees who set themselves the challenge early in the year. They invited their friends to take on the challenge with them and together they have swum over 800km in training.

RNLI fundraiser Celia Allen said, “We are thrilled with the donation from these hardy swimmers. As a charity we rely upon the public’s support to enable us to save lives at sea and this donation will go a long way in helping us achieve this.”

Guernsey Electricity CEO Alan Bates added: “The swim was a particularly tough challenge so we were pleased to match the team’s fundraising efforts. As part of Guernsey Electricity’s commitment to connecting with our community, we are pleased to donate both time and money to local charities and organisations.”
