David Doutney, Counsel in the Disputes & Risk team at Babbé, has been admitted as an Advocate of the Royal Court of Guernsey.
Advocate Doutney (pictured) qualified as a solicitor in Australia and was subsequently admitted to practice in the Cayman Islands. Prior to joining Babbé, David worked at top tier firms in both Sydney and the Cayman Islands. He boasts a very strong academic background and a broad work history including establishing and managing his own events management business and being a member of the Australian army.
Throughout his career David has worked on high value complex cross-border insolvency matters, company and shareholder disputes, regulatory and administrative law proceedings, and intellectual property disputes.
David commented: “I’d like to thank everyone at Babbé for their support and encouragement whilst I undertook the challenging task of balancing studies for the Bar and work commitments; in particular, Advocate Todd McGuffin, my Pupil Master, for his unwavering support and unflinching confidence in me”.
David commenced his pupillage in November 2022 under the guidance of Advocate McGuffin, was awarded the Certificat d’Etudes Juridiques Francaises et Normandes from the Université de Caen Normandie in late 2022 and successfully passed the Guernsey Bar Exams in 2023.
Advocate McGuffin, Head of Disputes & Risk at Babbé, concluded by saying: “David richly deserves his call to the Guernsey Bar having worked diligently in completing the challenging qualification requirements of such. He brings to the Bar and our firm’s clients his substantial intellect but also business acumen and focus as products of his work and life experiences to date. David’s call and promotion to the position of Counsel in the team continues to evidence the strong track record of growth in our Disputes & Risk offering which now boasts four Advocates supported by a further 7 fee earners.”
