Dementia Jersey launches free training programme for family carers

Dementia Jersey has announced the launch of a practical new training programme for family carers, the Dementia Information Programme.

This free interactive programme is designed to provide useful information, advice, and tips on a range of subjects to help family carers who are supporting or caring for a friend or family member with dementia at home.

The training was designed following requests from family carers to have some scenario-based training on how to care for someone with dementia. The Dementia Information Programme (DIP) is classroom based but features different scenarios of common challenges and is limited to small groups of 15 people to ensure inclusivity and personalised attention.

The programme consists of four 2-hour sessions, held once a week for 4 weeks. The programme will be repeated three times per year with the first launching in April.

Wendy Munn, Lead Dementia Advisor commented: “Many people we see at Dementia Jersey are unpaid carers, caring for a family member. Their role as a carer is a path their life has taken, as opposed to being a paid carer with relevant qualifications and a job they have chosen. The aim of DIP is to provide family carers with the necessary knowledge, skills, and support to help them feel better equipped in their role. The program will cover a range of topics, including understanding dementia, communication, accessing useful services, and looking after oneself as a carer.”

Further information, including how to book the morning courses and evening courses, can be found here.
