Guernsey software and data company, Cortex Technologies, has played a small but vital role in Guernsey Post’s £1.8m project parcel sorter project.

Cortex deployed Bragi, its locally developed data management and warehousing software, enabling Guernsey Post to have real-time information on the precise whereabouts of parcels, as they prepare for the busy Christmas season.

The parcel sorter takes care of scanning, weighing and logging parcel information into a database, before routing the parcel to the correct delivery chute. Bragi is actively monitoring this and by integrating with other systems and external sources, provides tracking and location data in near real-time.

Jason Magee, lead developer on the project for Cortex, said: “It was really exciting to work on this. We’ve done some cool stuff with the Post in the past, but this was a whole new level as we knew how important it was. It took some innovative thinking to ensure that Bragi could keep up with the non-stop flow of data coming from the sorter.”

With an anticipated daily throughput of 30,000 parcels in the lead-up to Christmas, Neil Pailing, Head of IT at Guernsey Post, expressed the significance of Bragi in keeping islanders well-informed about the status of their parcels.

Neil said “The parcel sorter project has been a huge strategic initiative for us and working with Cortex has really helped us deliver. Automating the process means that we don’t have postal workers having to manually receipt scan items on their handheld, which greatly simplifies their tasks before heading out for deliveries. It ultimately means we can process more parcels which is so important at peak times.”

The firms have confirmed plans for further development such as performance reporting. “It’s great to work with a trusted and experienced local team, using software that was built here in Guernsey.” said Neil.

Jason agreed, saying “Bragi is a powerful platform and we’re looking forward to finding new ways for it to help out. Although hopefully a little less pressure from Santa next time!”
