Two 20MVA electricity transformers have been delivered to the Princess Elizabeth Hospital by Guernsey Electricity, as part of a major network enhancement project.
Chris Burgess, Project Management Team Lead at Guernsey Electricity, said: “This installation forms an important part of the continual investment in our existing infrastructure.
“It will meet the needs of the hospital’s modernisation, accelerate its decarbonisation and increase resilience and capacity in the network supplying the South of Guernsey.”
The transformers, which were constructed in Sibiu, Romania and cost over £1 million, have already travelled across Europe and were transported from the port on a special, multi-wheel vehicle with 360 axles.
Mike Harris, Assistant Harbour Master at Guernsey Ports, commented: “We have been pleased to assist the team at Guernsey Electricity on this project by allocating space on the East Arm for the storage of the equipment.”
Guernsey Electricity confirmed that it expects the major project to be fully installed and operational by 2028. This follows a similar project at Beau Sejour in 2021, reinforcing the network for the energy transition.
