Guernsey Arts have announced that submissions are now open for the 2024 Bailiwick Wildlife Photography exhibition, supported this year by Guernsey Electricity’s Power to the People Fund.

Now in its third year, local wildlife photographers have the chance to submit their most dynamic images of Bailiwick wildlife, from across Sark, Alderney, Herm and Guernsey, to feature in a large community exhibition

Last year’s edition saw 60 photographers of all ages and skill levels taking part. Over 200 individual photos were submitted across the categories of Bird, Marine, Insect, Mammal, In Your Garden, including a number of photos by those aged 16 and under.

The categories for 2024 are :

  • Birds
  • Insects
  • Marine
  • Bailiwick Animals
  • Patterns in Nature
  • Video & Film

There will be a prize given for each category as well as for the winner of the People’s Choice Award and a prize given for Young Bailiwick Wildlife Photographer of the Year.

Each year, a Guest Judge is chosen with a category specialisation – this year we will be causing a buzz with the intricate insect macro photography of Barry Wells. Barry showcases the natural beauty of Guernsey through his photography, in the hope that there will be a greater appreciation of the Island’s biodiversity and the urgent need to protect local wildlife and their habitats. Barry Wells is co-founder and honorary President of The Pollinator Project, having co-founded the project in 2017 with Vanessa Crispini-Adams.

Matthew Le Maitre, Environmental Sustainability Lead at Guernsey Electricity commented:  “We are delighted to have the opportunity to support the Bailiwick Wildlife Photography Exhibition through our Power to the People Fund. The exhibition allows photographers of all ages from across the Bailiwick to showcase their talents and to raise awareness of the wildlife within our environment.

“The exhibition will also highlight the importance of sustainability, which aligns with Guernsey Electricity’s values. We look forward to sharing this unique experience with residents from across the Bailiwick.”

Russ Fossey, Head of Arts Development at Guernsey Arts added: “The Bailiwick Wildlife Open is an inspiring community exhibition. With an increase in submissions every year, it has been going from strength to strength, with submissions from photographers of all ages and experience levels. We are very pleased to be partnering with Guernsey Electricity to amplify opportunities for our Island community to engage with the works, to discover more about the nature and wildlife residing in the Bailiwick, and to explore how the power of art can inform decision makers and make a difference to our understanding of the environment”

The closing date of submissions will be the 30th of November 2023. More information about the exhibition can be found here.
