First Central Group is hosting three students for six weeks as part of the Digital Greenhouse’s Discover Digital Internship programme.
This is the seventh year First Central has taken part in the internship programme, hosting a total of 20 students over the years.
The scheme provides students who have a keen interest in a digital career with practical experience in local companies, allowing them to experience the variety of exciting and challenging careers in the digital sector.
Post-16 students Cai Williams, Freya Nicholls and Jack Bennett, are spending six weeks with First Central between 17 July and 25 August, to give them an idea of what life is like for a software developer in a professional organisation.
The students have been working on a call analysis project, where they used a combination of JavaScript, HTML and CSS coding, and several other different pieces of software, programmes and coding languages to create the programme which will analyse emotions behind customer calls to the insurer. The programme would look to eventually incorporate AI to analyse whether the call was positive or negative through the words and tone of voice used by the customer, creating a summary for customer agents to improve the service provided.
Dan Edmunds, First Central’s IT Technical Operations Manager, said: “Cai, Freya and Jack immediately got to grips with the project, it’s great to see their creative and innovative juices flow! We hope the digital internship will provide a valuable and unique way of learning for them. This is our seventh year as part of the Discover Digital Internship programme and we’re proud to continue to be part of the interns’ educational journey.”
Tom Upson, previous intern and now Site Reliability Engineer at First Central, has been with the organisation for more than four years. He said: “The Digital Greenhouse scheme is a great way of embedding yourself in the digital sector. The opportunity to experience the working environment and simultaneously develop skills in multiple areas is instrumental in career building and for me personally, helped kickstart my career in tech.”
