Guernsey’s Bright Electrical Our Race for Life event has surpassed the organisers’ expectations by doubling the number of entrants and the money raised in just their second year of running the event.
More than 750 people headed to the KGV for the event that took them on a 3km or 5km course around Saumarez Park.
“There’s a been a lot of smiles, some tears, several really inspirational stories and a LOT of pink,” said head organiser Dani Barnett, herself a BRCA gene carrier.
“When we got together to bring the Race for Life back to Guernsey last year, we were all new to this kind of event and were blown away by the support we had then. We hoped this year it would be even bigger, but I just can’t express how thrilled we are to have had 750 people registered to run and, as of Monday 15 May, raised over £22,000 for Cancer Research – Guernsey Branch.”
The event was made even more successful thanks to sponsors, Bright Electrical, volunteers and the generosity of entrants’ friends and family supporting with fundraising – with several people raising in excess of £1,000 and, in one case, organising a spin-off event for Sark residents.
Dani added: “We couldn’t do this without the volunteers putting in hours and hours of their own time to make it a success and the companies supporting us financially so that all the money raised, £30,000 since we started, can go to fight back against cancer and the devastation it brings to people’s lives.
“So this is a big thank you to everyone who made it a success, we’ll definitely be back next year.”
