Guernsey Water has created an educational video to help teach children about the island’s precious water cycle, all the way from source to sea.

The video provides a behind the scenes look at the route the island’s rainwater takes before it comes out of the tap, and after it is flushed down the toilet.

Guernsey Water staff visit schools and arrange on-site talks to explain all kinds of water related topics – most valuably its journey from source to sea.

Tania Sargent, Customer Service Manager at Guernsey Water said: “Our video has been created for use as a teaching resource in the classroom or at home, but should provide an interesting insight to a much wider audience.

“It can be easy to take water for granted, but we hope that by providing an understanding of the island’s water cycle we can further encourage and promote the use water wisely message.”

Despite Guernsey’s water storage currently being 100% full, the situation looked very different during November, with storage levels approximately 19% below the ten-year average for the time of year.

Watching the video for the first time were year five pupils from Hautes Capelles Primary School during a lesson with Guernsey Water’s catchment protection officer, Sarah Brown.

The school’s year five team said that Sarah was able to provide expert knowledge to answer all of the children’s inquisitive questions which really reinforced their learning. The Source to Sea video supported their field visit to the reservoir and enabled the children to see links between their geography learning and the local environment.
