The Ladies’ College is celebrating its 150th anniversary with a special art exhibit showcasing the school through the eyes of its students.
The exhibit will be on display at the school starting on 30 January. It will be displayed alongside a commissioned piece by local artist and College alumna Eleanor Atkinson, whose work the collages were inspired by.
The students were given the task of taking 15 photographs of the school and then recreating one of them using a variety of materials. To support the students in their work, Eleanor Atkinson produced videos detailing her creative process when making her own collages, which are inspired by Guernsey’s history and landscape.
Emma Clements, Head of Sixth Form and Art, said: “Discussions and planning meetings with many departments across the College helped the Art team plan projects which would celebrate visually the successes, key moments in history and pride we have in being part of such a wonderful College.
“Students used The Ladies’ College site to start a visual journey of creating individual and unique collages in the style of Ellie’s work but adding their own individual qualities and personalities.’
Eleanor’s commissioned montage also contains a variety of flowers and plants which would not usually be seen on entry to the College.
She said: “Since I left school in 2012, there have been so many incredible developments at The Ladies’ College and the new buildings are wonderful.
“I wanted to capture some of the historical architecture such as Melrose school in a celebration of old and new. I have also emphasised the abundance of green space and the contrast between wooded area of oak trees and the palm trees.”
Hope W, a student in Remove, said: “We started off the project by looking at Eleanor’s work and drawing a copy, and then moved on to starting our own. The project was a lot of fun to do and went really well, with all students enjoying it.”
