Alderney aims to cash in on gaming market amid Brexit uncertainty

Alderney will be promoting the stability that the island represents in the face of Brexit to more than 30,000 delegates this week at ICE Totally Gaming, the world’s largest gambling technology event, which starts today at the ExCeL centre in London.

The island is pitching itself as a pioneering jurisdiction in the licensing and regulation of eGambling and has been followed by other locations competing for a share of the growing market. It is anticipated that the island will this year be able to capitalise on its location outside of Europe and the European Economic Area, free from the uncertainties of Brexit, to win new business.

Marc Lainé, managing director of C5 Alliance’s Guernsey division, will be one of those at the Team Alderney stand along with his colleague and account manager Adrian Bott.

Marc said: “It’s a massive event and it’s a market that’s growing globally. ICE is an opportunity to catch up with clients and meet prospective clients. The whole industry attends. We will be there to represent Alderney Gambling as well as C5. Alderney is a primary place to be licensed and to host eGambling services, particularly in an uncertain time regarding Brexit.”

“We don’t know what it’s going to mean for some of our competitors but Alderney is a safer bet as its position remains unchanged. It has never been in the EU or EEA therefore it is unaffected by a hard or soft Brexit. It’s safe and reliable with top tier licensing. I would be nervous about some of the other locations.”

He added that while the eGambling industry was mature there was still a lot of growth to be seen. It was also a sector populated by a relatively young community and there was a need to educate the market about Alderney in what has grown to be such a competitive market.

“The benefits of being licensed by the AGCC means that businesses will not only be licensed and regulated in Alderney but will want to establish their servers and hosting here. C5 doesn’t just host, we design, build, procure, patch, maintain and monitor their systems so we are a full service house and that’s almost unique amongst data centres and offers a unique incubation service for businesses relocating to the island, which many well-renowned businesses have found invaluable.”
