Jersey islanders who pay for their electricity using Pay As You Go (PAYG) Smart Meters can now top up online anytime without having to leave their homes.
Jersey Electricity (JE) has partnered with Payzone and CityPay to develop the digital payment system, giving its PAYG customers more convenience than ever before.
Topup.je is now available to Jersey’s 4,100 PAYG electricity customers following a successful trial among employees and Andium tenants. It is the next step in JE’s transformation of its prepayment system made possible by Smart Meters.
Jersey has become the first jurisdiction in the British Isles to complete the rollout of Smart Meters. The final phase began in February when JE started to replace its PAYG key system, which had existed for twenty five years, with remote charging Smart Meters. The old keys were replaced by Smart Cards containing a customer’s unique six-digit Meter Number. The cards can be used at over fifty Payzone locations around the Island.
JE’s Head of Digital Technology Werner Bornman said: “We accelerated our prepaid Smart
Meter rollout in light of the pandemic because of the meters’ remote charging capabilities. Creating a digital prepayment system was our next priority. We listen carefully to customer feedback and understand the need for such an online payment solution. As well as added convenience, we hope Topup.je will give reassurance to those Islanders forced to self-isolate or who may be reluctant to go out during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
Payzone’s Commercial Director Simon Lambert said: “We’ve been working with Jersey Electricity since 2019 to provide customers with the convenience of making prepaid electricity payments over the counter at Payzone outlets. Building on this partnership, Payzone is delighted to have worked with the utility on this next step of providing a digital payments platform. This platform is the first of its kind Payzone has developed for an electricity company.”
