Guernsey’s A&E is more than A-okay!

The Emergency Department at Guernsey’s Princess Elizabeth Hospital has been awarded ‘excellence’ status following three audits of the facility.

The Safe, Clean & Personal Every Day (SCAPE) checks are the local equivalent of the Care Quality Commission (CQC) standards in the UK.

As part of ongoing improvements to ensure the audits are passed, last month the patient monitoring system was replaced with an up to date one which centralises monitoring and ECG machines were replaced.

Jan Coleman, Director of Hospital Services, said: “We are seeking to ensure that patients attending the Emergency Department feel welcome and are dealt with in the most considerate and appropriate way. Our reception area will be undergoing a refurbishment which we hope will further provide a welcoming and comfortable place to wait for patients and visitors to the ED.”

“Achieving a “Status of Excellence” following three Safe, Clean & Personal Every Day audits is a testament to the hard work of all the staff working in our Emergency Department. Our Consultant and Associate Doctor-led service  together with our highly competent, specialised and dedicated nursing team, together with the support of our excellent receptionists, make up the Emergency Department team who provide 24/7 care, 365 days.”

The Emergency Department sees on average 17,000 patients every year, with more than 3,000 arriving by ambulance. The busiest day is Sunday, while the busiest time is lunchtimes between 11am and 3pm.

More than two thirds of patients are seen within 30 minutes of arrival and more than 15,000 of the 17,000 patients are discharged home after treatment.
