The prestigious Channel Island Sports Awards event is being put on hold for one year.
The event planned for January 2021 has been shelved, following huge disruption to the sporting calendar caused by the pandemic.
The ITV event has taken place every January since 2003 with two programmes broadcast live from the awards evening on ITV Channel Television. Each year individual category awards have been presented to the Channel Islands’ Team of the Year, Coach of the Year, Rising Star and the Michael Lucas Sporting Hero, with the public voting for the main award, the Channel Islands Sports Personality of the Year.
ITV Channel Television Head of News & Programmes, Karen Rankine said: “It’s hugely disappointing to have to make this decision, but given the lack of competitive sport taking place this year, and the continued restrictions around public events, we’ve taken the difficult decision to cancel the awards for this year”.
Paul Adkins, Marketing and Operations Director for Betway, the main sponsor, added: “The event is a great way to highlight sport within the Channel Islands, but this year it feels more appropriate to push the pause button, and to return to Beau Sejour in January 2022 after what we all hope will be an amazing year for sport, including of course, the planned NatWest Island Games coming to Guernsey in July next year”.
The event will return in January 2022.
