Twenty-two university students from Jersey, the UK, Estonia, Cyprus and Zimbabwe have started client work across tax and audit sectors within Deloitte’s Jersey and Guernsey offices as they commence their training contracts with the firm.

The exceptionally large number of joiners this year represents a diverse range of backgrounds, experience and academic expertise.

John Clacy, Deloitte Partner in charge of the Channel Islands, said: “The large number of graduates joining us this year is a testament to the fantastic training and career progression that Deloitte offers, coupled with the attractions of island life. Our business in both islands continues to flourish, it’s critical to bring in the next generation of talent to meet the demands of that growth.”

The new trainees are all university and college graduates who hold academic degrees ranging from Physics and Pharmacy to Law and Politics.

Joining the tax team in Guernsey is Keller Pryde from Ayre in Scotland. Keller recently graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a masters degree in Chemical Engineering.

Two more graduates, Isabel Renfrew and Emma Dunkerton, join the tax team in Jersey with degrees in Biology & Psychology and Chemistry respectively. Isabel attended the University of Newcastle, with Emma attending the University of Leeds.

A further 19 trainees have joined Deloitte’s audit and assurance service line across the Channel Islands.

Eleven trainees who have all recently graduated from top universities across the UK including Durham and Exeter have begun training in audit and assurance at Deloitte Jersey. They bring to Deloitte academic specialisms ranging from Accounting and Finance to the Russian language.

A further eight graduates are relocating to join audit in Guernsey: Alistair Blaza, who read Economics at the University of Lancaster; Jana Skinjova, who read Accounting with Management at the University of Westminster; Matthew Armstrong, who studied Business Management at the University of Exeter; and Harvey Appleby, who read Jurisprudence at the University of Oxford.

Joining them are Antigone Kyriakide, who has a degree in Statistics, Economics and Finance from University College London; Ashkay Nagda, with a degree in Accounting for Management from Ashton University; Kudzai Nyawata, with a degree in Accounting and Finance and Financial Economics from the University of Bedfordshire; and Azhar Khan, who attended Aston University reading Economics and Management.

Mr Clacy concludes: “Deloitte offers a unique experience because of its people, and our trainees’ diverse academic backgrounds and specialisms reflects our desire to have the best and brightest minds who all bring something different to our team and clients.”

All trainees will complete a month of office and college-based learning to give them essential knowledge and skills. This initial training course ensures that the students settle into the business and build strong relationships with their mentors, appraisers and ‘buddies’ before commencing client work.
