26 Sep: ‘Everest Madness’ the penultimate day of the 30/30 cycle challenge

‘Everest Madness’ is taking place between 8am and noon on Saturday 26th September, which is the penultimate day of what is the 13th edition of the 30/30 event to be organised by Ian Brown’s Cycle Shop in support of Les Bourgs Hospice.

The ‘Everest Madness’ route starts from the bottom of L’Eree Hill up to La Croix (the cemetery) on Route des Paysans, which represents an elevation of 76 metres and means that there will need to be 117 ascents by the riders to equate to the height of Mount Everest.

Mark OIiphant, Head of Communications at TISE, said: “We have six riders participating in the 30/30 and raising money for Les Bourgs Hospice, which is our chosen charity of choice for 2020. We are keen to raise as much money as possible for them during this year, not just as it is such a worthy cause but especially because all charities, including Les Bourgs Hospice, have been adversely impacted in their fundraising as a result of coronavirus”.

The team from TISE is over halfway to reaching its aim of raising £2,500, with the final total being matched by the company.

Mr Oliphant added: “One of our team members, Ben Snook, had the idea of organising some sort of Everest challenge – in a similar manner to the climbing event – to raise awareness of this year’s 30/30 and our efforts at TISE of raising £2,500. He spoke to Ian and together we’ve come up with something which we think will be a challenging but fun way of trying to raise more money while also bringing together the 30/30 riders and their family and friends”.

For the 30/30, each participant must complete 30 rides of at least one hour a day for 30 consecutive days. The start date of this year’s 30/30 was moved from late April to late August due to coronavirus and means the event concludes on Sunday 27 September.

Ian Brown, the shop’s owner and 30/30 cycle event organiser, said: “It’s great that we’ve still been able to put on the event and raise money for Les Bourgs Hospice but unfortunately, we haven’t been able to rearrange the annual Rocque to Rock cycle event which usually coincides with the end of the 30/30.

“This means that while we’ll still be celebrating the final day of the 30/30, we won’t be able to conclude it in quite the same way as normal and there will be a bit of a hole in the fundraising this year so I was delighted when Ben came to me with the idea of an Everest challenge. It is a fantastic way to bring riders together, raise awareness of the event and hopefully raise some much-needed additional funds for the charity”.
