Sanctuary Trust’s fundraiser put to sleep as Covid-19 restrictions hit again

Sanctuary Trust, Jersey’s men’s homeless charity has had to cancel their second major fundraising event of the year due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Sleep Out for Sanctuary Trust was due to take place in Pier Road car park this weekend but latest government guidelines on social gatherings has meant organisers have had to cancel the event until next year.

Brett Cutts, general manger of the charity said the decision to pull the plug on the fundraiser has not been taken lightly.  “This is a double blow to our charity, after having to cancel our popular Walk into Light in April. In reality, we are talking about at least £30,000 in lost fundraising revenue, which is a huge amount to a self–supporting charity that receives no direct help from the States of Jersey.”

He said the charity had already restricted Sleep Out numbers but with the latest guidelines released yesterday, they felt it would be irresponsible to go ahead.  “We are deeply disappointed to have made this decision and we are hugely indebted to the support we have received from the community but their safety must come first.”

The charity is hopeful that both events will make a return next year, in what will be the charities 10 year anniversary.

Last year’s inaugural event raised over £15,000 for the charity with every penny raised put towards helping vulnerable men get their lives back on track and ultimately putting an end to homelessness in the Island.
