The biggest school quiz in the Channel Islands is back this autumn, bringing together the brightest young minds in Guernsey and Jersey.
This year’s theme is “your world” – testing students’ knowledge on the positive and negative impacts people have on the world. The Challenge will raise awareness of the difference that students and young people can make.
The De Putron Challenge has seen continued growth since it was first introduced in 2007 with just five Guernsey schools. Last year more than 50 Channel Island schools took part across three exciting days of challenges. There will be three separate contests, for Year 6, Year 8 and Post-16. Each school will take part in a round of heats before a final round will decide which teams will represent their island in the inter-island challenge.
Bailiwick Express News Editor, Laura Clayton, will be this year’s De Putron Challenge quizmaster and will put the teams through their paces. The rounds are current affairs, arts and literature and geography and science. As well as a picture round on the theme ‘your world’ and team rounds where students will answer questions about a video and complete words and maths puzzles.
The technology round will test teams’ coding skills using the software ‘Trinket’. Teams will work together to replicate a complex shape. They will be judged on art style, colour, similarity to the provided shape and optimisation of coding.
Hayley de Putron, a Trustee of the Ana Leaf Foundation and founder of the De Putron Challenge, said: “The De Putron Challenge is hugely popular and it continues to get bigger and better every year. We welcome schools to bring along as many supporters as they would like. The atmosphere is fantastic with supporters cheering on their teams and seeing the excitement on their faces is delightful.”
The De Putron Challenge encourages everyone to take part. Schools often hold their own internal quizzes to determine who will represent their year and then most schools bring along their whole class, friends and family members on the day to support.
“We want to help develop young minds and celebrate intelligence which is why we make changes every year to make it better, more enjoyable and rewarding for everyone. Each year we are so impressed with the student’s knowledge and we hope this year to inspire them to use their bright minds to change the world for the better”, said Mrs de Putron.
The Guernsey De Putron Challenge will be held on Tuesday 5 November at St James Concert Hall. The Jersey De Putron Challenge will be held on Wednesday 13 November at The Royal Jersey Showground. All spectators are welcome.
The inter-island final on Thursday 21 November at the Grand Hotel in Jersey will be live-streamed for those people who are unable to attend on the day. Links to this will be posted on the De Putron Challenge’s official social media channels.
