St Helier’s Waterfront was activated this summer with lunchtime Tai Chi and Yoga sessions, along with after-work “Hola Friday!” DJ evenings inspired by Ibiza vibes.
Organised by the Jersey Development Company (JDC), these events were a hit with locals and visitors alike. Due to their popularity, the States-owned company has announced plans to run similar events next year.
From June to September, well-attended complimentary wellness sessions took place on the lawn at Marina Gardens (above the Waterfront Car Park) and for July and August, laid-back DJ sessions at the IFC’s Trenton Square. St. Helier’s community embraced the initiatives, transforming the Waterfront into a hub of activity, relaxation, and social connection.
The Marina Gardens midday Yoga and Tai Chi sessions, led by experienced practitioners Joe Houzé and Ray Molloy, became a weekly highlight, offering a peaceful retreat during the working day.
Feedback from attendees has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing their appreciation for the opportunities to focus on their health and wellbeing.
‘Hola Friday!’ at the IFC’s Trenton Square also proved to be a hit, drawing in crowds eager to unwind and kickstart their weekends with a touch of Ibiza vibes. The talented DJ line-up provided the perfect soundtrack for Friday’s summer evenings. Those attending said the atmosphere was fantastic, with light bites and refreshments from Cooper & Co and The Loft at Big Maggy’s, adding to the overall experience. The success of these events has solidified JDC’s approach to placemaking by actively programming the public spaces that it owns and organising community events to activate St. Helier’s Waterfront and provide activities for the community.
JDC’s CEO, Lee Henry, commented: “We are incredibly pleased with the turnout and delighted with the positive feedback from the community. Our goal has always been to make the Waterfront a vibrant, inclusive space for everyone, and these events have truly brought that vision to life. The combination of wellness and social activities has resonated with Islanders and visitors, and we’re looking forward to continuing to build on this momentum.”
He continued: “In response to popular demand, we are pleased to announce our partnership with AquaSplash to continue offering complimentary lunchtime wellness sessions indoors. We extend our gratitude to Serco, the operator of AquaSplash, for their commitment to enhancing the facility and promoting activity on the Waterfront.”
AquaSplash Contract Manager Steve Dunford said: “AquaSplash is delighted to partner with JDC to ensure that Wellness classes continue throughout the winter months. We look forward to welcoming everyone to our site!”
