Queens Road Medical Practice is to develop a new home following the completion of the purchase of the former Education Department site on the Grange from the States of Guernsey.
It is the first property that Guernsey’s Government has sold as part of its property rationalisation programme.
Plans are underway to transform the site, which, when it opens in 2024, will include a traditional doctor’s practice alongside a new educational space and dedicated Social Prescribing and Counselling suite. The new facility is more than twice the size of the current site and will feature more parking spaces, with an accessible drop off/turning point, an enclosed bike store, electric car charging points and a pétanque court.
The property on the Grange is only 300 yards away from the existing practice, so any potential disruption to patients and staff from the move should hopefully be minimised.
Will Pierce, Chief Executive Officer at Queens Road Medical Practice, said: “We have been searching for a suitable location for several years as we are outgrowing our current site. We are very pleased to have bought such a landmark building from the States, which will enable us to create a great environment for patients to visit and our staff to work from.
Deputy Dave Mahoney, a member of the Policy & Resources Committee, said: “This was a significant site in States ownership which we vacated some time ago as part of our ongoing property rationalisation programme, which aims to use our property portfolio more efficiently and free up sites we don’t need.
“I’m extremely pleased the sale has now been completed, particularly as the new owners will be developing it into a health and wellbeing site for the benefit of our community.”
The Longfrie surgery will remain as part of Queens Road Medical Practice, and the current Queens Road Surgery will remain open until the new site is ready to occupy.
