Children across Guernsey and Alderney have once again received their mission brief to be the heroes in the battle against vegetables taking over the world.
Eat Them To Defeat Them, a national campaign run by Veg Power, commenced this week with all States primary schools across Guernsey and Alderney taking part in the fun.
“This is a landmark year for us as we have all States primary schools taking part in the campaign,” said Cat Tyrrell, Eat Well Officer at the Health Improvement Commission. “Each year we support schools to take part by providing veg boxes to reception classes and covering the costs of Veg Power resources.
“This year we’ve expanded our offering so that each child in reception and KS1 will receive these resources such as progress tracker charts and stickers. This means that now more children can take part over multiple years from reception through to Year 2. This repeated exposure to veg is really beneficial in helping children overcome fussiness. By children exploring these foods amongst their peers at school, healthy eating is also normalised in the school environment.”
Lindsay Sword, Year 4 class teacher at Vauvert Primary School said: “At Vauvert we know how important is to have a balanced plate and lunch box to keep us full and energised for a day of learning and activity. We have taken the opportunity to make ‘Eat Them To Defeat Them’ a school initiative and a fun way of eating veggies! We hope that pupils become more aware of the benefits of all the different vegetables that we can eat and hopefully see some colourful lunchboxes.”
