A large fundraising event in support of Ukraine is being organised by a team of Jersey volunteers to coincide with the war-torn country’s National Day on August 24th.
Ukraine Week will take place between 21st-27th August and will see a series of fundraising initiatives take place across Jersey, including a black-tie dinner, a giant ‘human Ukraine flag’ photo, a beach-side concert, an auction and pop-up stalls celebrating (and selling) Ukrainian foods, fashion and art.
Islanders and businesses are also being urged to hold their own events, be it a dinner party for friends, a pub quiz, a yellow and blue dress-down day in the office, a personal sports challenge or a car wash.
All money raised throughout the week will be donated to the Bailiff’s Ukraine Appeal through charity Jersey Side by Side. It will then be distributed to vetted charities operating inside Ukraine by Jersey Overseas Aid.
“Jersey has stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of Ukraine since the invasion began on 24th of February. Starting with a candlelit vigil in Royal Square, the Appeal has raised and distributed almost £2.3m of assistance (details on Jersey Overseas Aid’s website here), including essential medical supplies, ballistic vests and helmets for front-line medics, incubators for premature babies, and mine-clearance training courses for Ukrainian women.
The Island has also collected and sent 15 lorry-loads of donations and supplied 200 surplus oxygen concentrators from Jersey’s hospital. This speaks volumes about the character and culture of the Island,” said Michel Le Troquer, Chairman of Jersey Side by Side.
“Ukrainian flags flutter over every corner of our Island, and we have been privileged to welcome several Ukrainian families fleeing the conflict. I believe that Jersey’s ‘Ukraine Week’ at the end of August will clearly demonstrate Jersey’s continuing support for Ukraine while also raising more money also those so badly affected by this senseless conflict,” he concluded.
The full schedule of events is available on Side by Side’s website and will be updated regularly. Up to date information will be shared on the charity’s Facebook page @jerseysidebyside.
A fundraising pack will also be made available on the website for individuals, community groups and businesses wishing to organise their own Ukraine Week fundraising activities. Ideas include sponsored challenges, Ukraine-themed dinners, and ‘yellow-and-blue’ dress-down days at work.
