Turning Christmas trees into flames of support for firefighters

Firefighters in Guernsey will be collecting used Christmas Trees again this year to raise money for the Firefighters Charity, following on from the success of last year’s event.

The volunteers from the Guernsey Fire & Rescue Service collecting the trees will be doing so while off duty in their own time with their own vehicles, but all of the money raised will go to the charity.

The collections will be taking place soon after Christmas, towards the end of this year and in the New Year.

Islanders will be able to email or text the volunteers with their address and preferred collection day nearer the time to arrange the collection of their trees.

The team will need people’s name, contact number and address for collection, and donations of any amount will be accepted by cash or card, and can be paid upon collection of the tree.

Charlie Roger, one of the volunteer firefighters, said: “This year we’re once again looking to collect Christmas Trees from around the island to raise money for the Firefighters Charity. It’s a cause that is clearly very close to the hearts of all of us at the GFRS, and we wanted to do something to raise support for them, while also giving back to the community.

“All of the collections will be done in our free time, and we’d be grateful for any donations people are willing to give. We will only be collecting real trees, and cannot collect trees that have been sprayed with fake snow or similar appliances.”
