Time to get creative with Jersey’s Digital Design Challenge

If you thought technology was all about software and hardware, coding and cables, Digital Jersey’s 2020 Digital Design Challenge is set to confound preconceptions and could net somebody a share of a £4,500 prize pot.

From data visualisation to artwork inspired by technology, the challenge, supported by KPMG Channel Islands, is searching for the most inspiring and creative pieces of digital design in the island.

There are three categories, each with a prize of £1,500 available. They are:

  • Visualising data – this could be any creative representation of information or data
  • Sensing and responding to the world – using data sources, which could include sensors, to create designs to transform our urban spaces or countryside
  • Digital and tech culture – a piece of art that uses digital tools to show how all things digital and tech influence our society

The Digital Design Challenge will form the curtain-raiser to this year’s Virtual Jersey TechWeek, with an opening night in the Digital Jersey Hub on Friday 16 October, before the judging and announcement of the winners on Saturday 17 October.

Digital Jersey CEO Tony Moretta said: “This year felt like a good time to take a step away from the coal face of digital and consider the creative and artistic ways all things tech could be brought to life through design. It could be imagery projected onto a local landmark, open source data being converted into a piece of music, or an immersive virtual reality experience, to give a few examples. I know the many creatives in Jersey will relish this challenge and come up with something even more impressive. The only limit is their imagination.”

Arthur Mainja, Senior Manager, KPMG Channel Islands said: “Technology underpins the way we work and service our clients at KPMG.  We strive to encourage, embrace, develop talent and reward innovation to take advantage of fresh ideas and up-and-coming possibilities. I am looking forward to seeing some creative lightbox ideas on art and design. I am also particularly intrigued by the fact that this year’s challenge is open to a wide range of backgrounds and that there are no limits on creativity and how participants can express themselves through digital culture and innovation. That’s what makes this challenge even more interesting.”

You can find out more about the challenge and submit your entry before the 11.59pm deadline on Monday 12 October, at www.digital.je/techweek/digital-design-challenge/
