After starting with a huge success in 2019, Guernsey’s annual BioBlitz had to be put on hold in 2020. This year it returns and it promises to be as exciting as in 2019… with even more opportunity for the public to get involved.
The event is being hosted by the Biodiversity Partnership, Guernsey Biological Records Centre and La Société Guernesiaise at Hommet Headland on Wednesday 12th May.
A BioBlitz is an event which strives to record as many species as possible from a site in a single day. It helps us better understand our nature reserves but also provides an opportunity for schools and the wider public to search for and record our local wildlife.
- Throughout the day expert recorders will be working with local schools to investigate everything from birds, moths, and bats to flowers, seaweeds and lichens.
- There will be a series of guided walks where members of the public can find out what exciting species have been found during the day, and to see if they can help add to the species count.
Details of these guided walks are available in the BioBlitz Timetable (see below).
Becky Ogier, Education Officer at La Société Guernesiaise, commented: “BioBlitz 2021 is a terrific opportunity for young people to learn about all aspects of Guernsey’s wildlife from experts in different fields, who will combine their findings to build a comprehensive picture of a ‘moment in time’ in the island’s natural history. Children can make a meaningful contribution by helping to collect data that will add to our knowledge of the island and inform our efforts at conservation.”
Julia Henney, Biodiversity Officer commented: “We are very excited to be able to host a BioBlitz in Guernsey once again. The BioBlitz is a great opportunity for the public and local schools to help us study our natural environment and it will also allow us to create a benchmark of the wildlife found in a site to help us better understand how Guernsey’s wildlife is faring. After having to cancel last year’s BioBlitz, we are very pleased to be able to bring it back again for 2021.”
