Last weekend, on 10th October 2021, a local video game tournament for cult video game Super Smash Bros was held.
Smash on the Rock – Sponsored by SystemLabs took place at Kingsman Executive Office Suites and the matches were streamed to a global audience over video game streaming platform Twitch.
The ‘Smash on the Rock’ tournament was one of many held across the globe for the fan favourite Nintendo game. The spaces were limited to 32 players and was open to players of all ages and skill level. The Jersey event saw local players face off against each other using a combination of skill and dexterity. The winner, Xavii (gaming handle), was crowned at the end of the day.
The tournament is the brainchild of local entrepreneur and passionate gamer James Morris, who has seen first-hand how the enjoyment of the game can bring people from all ages and backgrounds together.
James said “I’ve been a fan for of the game for a long time and quickly realised how many people shared my passion when I saw these Smash Bros tournaments take place all over the world. I decided to arrange this event to not only give gamers in Jersey the opportunity to experience in-person tournaments but to build the gaming community.”
SystemLabs, a local IT services and solutions provider, sponsored the event which offered the Island’s gamers a rare opportunity to come together and experience the unique playing environment.
Steve Quinn, Director of SystemsLabs said, “We’re really pleased to have sponsored this event. Where computer games once had a negative stigma attached to them we have seen how playing online creates communities and friendships. Being able to be part of this event which brought gamers together after a long period of limited social interaction for us all is a great feeling and it shows how important technology is at creating connections between people.”
