Businesses in the Bailiwick are being asked to share information and views on Brexit.

The Committee forEconomic Development, working closely with the Policy & Resources Committee, has commissioned BMG Research Limited to carry out a study of the potential impact of Brexit on businesses in the Bailiwick. The researchers are contacting firms in Guernsey, Alderney, and Sark to obtain information about their trading and employment practices, and to gather their views on the opportunities and challenges of Brexit.

The findings will be used by the States to inform extensive ongoing work to plan for the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union (“Brexit”). The research will also help the States prepare for the future economic framework between the UK and the EU, and any opportunities which may arise for the Bailiwick, including preparations for the Bailiwick to join the WTO under the UK’s membership.

BMG Research are conducting the survey primarily by telephone, with calls being made by trained market researchers to a sample of local businesses of varying sizes and across the economic sectors in the Bailiwick. Contact details have been sourced by BMG Research from Experian’s National Business Database. Businesses have been selected at random, but a number of variables have been considered to ensure that the overall sample represents the composition of Guernsey’s economy.

To help ensure the findings are as representative as possible, all businesses in the Bailiwick are encouraged to take part. Any business not contacted directly by BMG Research, or which does not wish to participate in a telephone survey, has the option of completing an online version of the survey, via the link available at gov.gg/brexitsurvey.

Businesses can also request to take part in the telephone survey, by supplying their contact details to the survey project team at brexitsurvey@gov.gg.The project team will forward on the business’s details to BMG Research to arrange a follow-up call.

BMG Research will report on the findings of the survey and present that report to the States of Guernsey via the Committee for Economic Development. BMG will treat individual responses in the strictest confidence and businesses will not be identified in any information passed to the States without the express consent of the business being given.

Where businesses consent to have their comments passed to the States with the name of their organisation attached, this will help the States to further explore the views of the business and to follow-up on any of the issues highlighted in the survey.

The survey will continue throughout September to enable as many businesses as possible to take part, either through telephone interview or the online survey.
