Shortlisted in the ‘Future place’ category, the Southwest St Helier Waterfront Visioning Framework will create a landscape-led vibrant mixed-use development for St Helier’s Waterfront.
Jersey Development Company and its architect partner ‘Gillespies’ are delighted that the Southwest St Helier Visioning Framework has been shortlisted for The Developer’s Pineapple Awards in the ‘Future Place’ category.
The industry publication, The Developer, (and partnered by The Design Council), established the annual Pineapple Awards to celebrate the very best in placemaking and recognising excellence in community engagement, activation, active travel, public space, creative retrofit, future place, place in progress and place of the year.
The 11.5 hectare, landscape-led, mixed-use development, will address the existing disconnect between the Waterfront and town centre and will transform the Waterfront into a vibrant and climate resilient urban neighbourhood, delivering significant community spaces, cultural and leisure facilities, accessible public realm and up to a thousand new homes.
The framework allows flexibility for change, but also sets in place fundamental parameters on climate, sustainability, biodiversity, connectivity and movement, open space, uses, design, building heights and views to ensure the vision is delivered for Jersey’s community.
More than half of the site area is designated to public realm, providing a broad spectrum of recreational and social spaces. These include an enhanced Waterfront Promenade and a re-imagined Les Jardins de la Mer, offering generous lawn space, a new play hub, outdoor lido and a series of sport hubs, providing new public amenities.
The development will focus on landscape, greenery and biodiversity achieving ‘The Urban Greening Factor’ target of 0.4, widely regarded as an international ‘best’ practice guide for facilitating sustainable developments.
A £150 Million investment will be provided in public infrastructure within the Waterfront development and will be entirely self-funded by Jersey Development Company.
The Outline Planning Application was submitted in December 2021 and a Public Inquiry is expected to take place towards the end of this year.
All shortlisted projects will have the chance to present their scheme to the judging panel and a live audience comprising industry professionals from local government, developers, investors and architects during the ‘Festival of Place: The Pineapples’, a major, week-long digital event that takes place 23-27 May. Winners will be revealed at an awards party on 6th July.
