The Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA) has commissioned specialist engineers to carry out an audit of mobile phone mast emissions in Jersey.
JCRA conducts annual checks on the Island’s mobile infrastructure to ensure emissions are within internationally agreed safe levels. The work will be carried out by iWireless-Solutions Ltd next week at predetermined sites in both urban and rural areas.
Standards are laid down by the International Commission for Non-Ionising Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). ICNIRP emission standards are recognised by the World Health Organisation and are used within the EU and other regions as a benchmark against which to measure the safety of radio-frequency emissions.
Tim Ringsdore, CEO at JCRA said: “The ICNIRP emissions standards and guidelines are very clear and form part of the Licence conditions for operators offering mobile phone services in the Island. It’s our job to make sure those standards are being met and this is a critical part of our work to give people peace of mind that our mobile networks are meeting internationally agreed safety levels.
“I am pleased to say that the operators cooperate fully in the process and there have been no problems reported from previous audits, but we are not complacent and remain committed to regularly monitoring levels to reassure people the Island is fully compliant with the latest guidelines and this will continue as 5G solutions are developed over the coming years.”
iWireless Solutions is an independent company specialising in radio frequency Health and Safety and advise major UK airports, telecoms regulators and businesses on emission safety matters for workers and the general public.
The audit also examines safety processes and procedures to ensure compliance with local health and safety legislation. The results of the audit, which should be available in November, will be published at www.jcra.je and will be available in hard copy on request.
