Twenty four of Haute Vallée’s Year 10 students have completed a two-day Peer Mediation Certificate in partnership with the Resolution Centre in Jersey.
This exciting initiative aims to provide vital support for students experiencing various conflicts within their lives.
The Peer Mediators are trained to offer neutral coaching support, empowering their fellow students to identify and explore their own solutions to the challenges they face.
By facilitating open dialogue, these mediators will create a safe space where students can communicate effectively and resolve their issues.
Haute Vallée Head Teacher, Mr Hughes, said: “We are incredibly excited about this initiative. It not only equips our students with valuable skills but also further fosters a sense of community and mutual respect within our school. The Peer Mediators will play a crucial role in supporting their peers.”
The training provided students with essential skills in communication, empathy and conflict resolution, preparing them to handle a variety of situations they may
encounter in their life. The Peer Mediation program aligns with the school’s commitment to creating a supportive and inclusive environment for all students.
Peer Mediators will be available to students through a referral process and they will be ready to assist those in need of support. Their role is not to solve problems for others, but to guide their peers in discovering their own solutions, thereby enhancing their problem-solving skills and confidence.
“At Haute Vallée school we are dedicated to nurturing the personal development of all our students, and the Peer Mediation initiative is a significant step towards achieving this goal.” says Tanja Tinari, Student and Family Support Wellbeing Manager. She concludes: “We’re look forward to witnessing the positive impact this program will have on our school community.”
The Resolution Centre teaches Peer Mediation across 11 primary schools and is growing its network of secondary school delivery programmes. The initiative is kindly sponsored by Viberts and is led by Richard Stevens, Director, The Resolution Centre who said: “We are proud to be developing the Peer Mediation in Schools programme further this academic year as we expand our practice to secondary school level. By fostering healthy communication, we aim to equip young adults with the tools to create meaningful change—not just in their own lives, but also in the lives of their peers. The ripple effects of these sessions extend far beyond the classroom, impacting communities and contributing to a more harmonious society. Haute Vallée School were a brilliant cohort and should be very proud of the aptitude to learn and their commitment to a safe and happy school community for everyone.”
Zoe Blomfield, Managing Partner at sponsoring firm, Viberts, said: “We are delighted to be the main sponsor for Peer Mediation and to be supporting Haute Vallée and many other of the Island schools. Viberts is committed to supporting the community we live in and to helping young people learn the skills needed to navigate conflict, knowing it will strengthen our community and help shape a brighter future for all.”
