Five people are going to be tackling marathon distances in October to raise money for the Jersey Employment Trust and Acorn Enterprises.
Each day this week, Channel Eye is meeting one of the runners. Today we meet Rob Hewlett.
A member of staff at Acorn Reuse is going to run half a dozen times around Val de la Mare reservoir to raise funds for the workplace he loves so much.
Reuse Supervisor Rob Hewlett (54) will be taking part in the Virtual London Marathon. The event allows him to choose his own course, be accompanied by friends or family, and run the 26 miles in stages if he wants to – so long as it is completed in 24 hours on Sunday 2nd October.
“I run regularly to keep fit but I don’t really do distance,” he said. “I ran a half-marathon in March 2020 and that was the longest I’ve ever run. When I saw the opportunity to get involved in the Virtual London Marathon for JET, I just didn’t think enough! But it’s fine because it’s nice to have a target.
“I absolutely love Acorn,’ he said. ‘From day one, it’s been a joy to work here. The culture that comes from the top is extraordinary. The fact that they put people first is so obvious. Seeing the way that people are treated has been very powerful for me personally.
“Working with people who have physical or learning disabilities or are on the spectrum, or anything else, it’s an eye-opener for me, but it’s part of the pleasure, it really is. It’s all about giving people the chance and I realise how grateful people are to have that opportunity here.”
