Young Enterprise Jersey, a local charity which for over 30 years has been enabling young people to start and run a business, has restructured and is now open for applications.
Now with a shorter six-month timeframe and more focused milestones, the programme culminates with the final presentations in early April. The winning team continues to trade and represents Jersey in the UK South East Regional Final.
Young Enterprise Chair, Alexia McClure, said: “We have spent the past few months talking to students and teachers about how to improve the Young Enterprise programme so more students can get involved and benefit from the experience. The changes we have made will make the programme more accessible and help students develop the entrepreneurial and soft skills they need in life and the workplace.”
During the Company Programme, students in Year 12 find out what it’s really like to set up and run a business. Students make all the decisions about their company, from deciding on the company name and product to creating a business plan, managing the company finances and selling their products. At the end of the programme the students wind up their company and pay their investors, simulating in a very practical way, the experience of running a real life company.
Alexia added: “We know there are many people in Jersey who have taken part and benefitted from Young Enterprise in the past. We appeal to these parents to encourage their own children to get involved, so they too can get a step up in their journey to further education and the workplace.”
The Young Enterprise Company Programme is supported by volunteer Business Advisors from Barclays, G4S, RBC and the Seymour Group. These business leaders share a wealth of business knowledge and expertise with the students they mentor.
