Local law firm Appleby has issued a warning to the Jersey public to be aware of a scam that is operating in the local market.
The scam relates to an advertisement for rental accommodation.
The person(s) advertising this accommodation are using Covid-19 as an excuse for the prospective tenant not being able to view the apartment which is being advertised for rent. On agreement of the fictitious lease – people are then being asked to pay deposits into an account named ‘Appleby’ which has nothing at all to do with the Law Firm.
The criminals involved are knowledgeable on Jersey matters, have referenced other Jersey law firms so at first appear legitimate. On receipt of the prospective tenant’s payment, promptly disappear.
Appleby are urging people to be aware of this scam and to be vigilant when paying deposits for rental accommodation, specifically recommending verification of payment details prior to making deposits.
Appleby have contacted the publication which features the advert, which has subsequently been removed
