Plans to improve security search area and duty-free at Guernsey Airport unveiled

Guernsey Airport is unveiling an ambitious programme of redevelopment of its passenger security screening area and expanded duty-free shopping for those traveling out of the airport in future.

The project will see the expansion of the security search area in the terminal building, there will be an extended preparation area where passengers will be able to get ready for security prior to being screened, an additional entrance introduced for travellers who require assistance. It is anticipated this will also be used as fast track service for passengers as well (further details will follow in due course).

Transitional preparation works for the project will commence shortly, and the work is being funded by a public private partnership.

Guernsey Airport’s Head of Aviation Services Ash Nicholas said: “This project represents a significant investment in the passenger experience for departing travellers at Guernsey Airport. It will also provide more space and capacity for airport security and will be a big improvement from the current somewhat constrained arrangements.

“More importantly, it will help Guernsey Airport meet the evolving challenges of forthcoming external security requirements set by Channel Island, UK, and EU aviation security regulators in the years to come, such as the potential for a body scanner. We do realise this work and its progression will cause some concern for airport site users and the travelling public. However, everything reasonable will be done to minimise disruption to those passengers using Guernsey Airport in the coming months.”

The work has been specifically planned in phases to make sure it doesn’t clash with the Christmas holiday getaway.

Brian Tyrrell from the architects Tyrrell Dowinton Associates said: “We are delighted to be part of this very important project for Guernsey Airport. We have designed the new security and preparation areas, and duty-free shopping enhancement with the passenger in mind. We’ve tried to maximise the amount of space, natural light, and create a positive passenger experience. We understand some passengers do find the airport security screening process stressful, however we are confident the new space will be warmly received by travellers when the project is completed.”

Passengers due to travel out of Guernsey Airport in the coming months should allow plenty of time to check-in for their flights and proceed through to security as there may only be one lane open at anytime whilst the project is taking place. Regular updates on the project’s progress will be reported on our website, and our Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram social media channels, as well as the Bailiwick’s media outlets.

There will be no reduction in the amount of seating in the departure lounge available to passengers when the duty-free shopping area increases. As the former Blue Islands lounge has been removed it will give Guernsey Airport a chance to enhance and improve departures for passengers by introducing a public water fountain, and a refreshed children’s area.

R G Falla Limited has been selected as the main building contractor for this project.
