Online maths tuition to support students impacted by Covid

All students at Jersey’s Government schools will be able to access tailored online maths tuition, following a new partnership between the Government of Jersey and Complete Maths.

The two-year arrangement has been funded through the Covid Recovery Catch-up Fun, and will allow students to access ‘Tutor’ – an online tuition programme. Tutor can be used by all students from Year 1 to Year 12, but is intended to particularly support students whose learning was negatively impacted by Covid-19.

Students can access Tutor in the classroom (with the support of teaching staff) or independently at home. Parents and teaching assistants can oversee the learner’s activity, and parents can also learn maths with their children.

Tutor provides diagnostic tests to make sure that students are accessing material at the appropriate level. The platform encourages students to keep learning by giving them experience points and awards based on how they use the programme.

To celebrate the rollout of Tutor, staff from Complete Maths visited Jersey on 4th July to see the programme being used in schools, and talk to teaching staff about the impact the programme is having.

Séan O’ Regan, Director of Education, said: “We know that Covid-19 is having an ongoing impact on students’ learning, and we have already launched a range of additional support for students and staff, including small-group tutoring and additional training.

“Tutor will be a valuable addition to our toolkit. It will allow individual students to take part in tailored, self-directed learning to support the areas where they need to develop. It will also enable teaching staff to remain focused on whole-class and small group teaching.”
