Ogier in Guernsey have launched an online wills portal, providing a simple, step-by-step means for Islanders to provide the Ogier team with the information they need to draft a simple will.
The portal is a secure digital platform, designed specifically with Guernsey law in mind and which provides clients with some assistance with the things they might like to consider. Online access means clients can provide the information from their own home, in their own time, without the need for an initial face-to-face meeting.
Partner Martyn Baudains said that feedback since the launch in April had been extremely positive. The first client to use the portal said: “We were very impressed with the online service, that was painless and allowed us to complete in the comfort of our home when convenient for us – particularly handy as we are in lockdown!”
Martyn said: “Preparing a will does not have to be complicated or time-consuming and this service has made the process even easier for some of our clients, especially while social distancing measures remain in place. The portal is not designed to replace the more traditional meetings where clients meet with an Advocate to give their instructions, but we know online services are becoming increasingly popular and we are delighted to be able to offer this service.
“A will is particularly important for the peace of mind it gives knowing that your affairs are in order. It means that your loved ones could be spared uncomfortable decisions and conversations at what will be a difficult time. Having a will could actually spare unnecessary expense.”
The portal asks clients some important questions and provides them with some guidance along the way. The answers and the draft will are always reviewed by an Advocate, and one of the team will follow up with any necessary questions before the draft will is sent to the client.
Once the client is happy that the will reflects their wishes a meeting will be arranged, in line with current social distancing requirements, to go over any remaining points and the will can then be executed.
Access to the Guernsey Wills Portal can be found here, whilst Ogier also operates a Jersey Wills Portal.
