Today it is five years since Europe’s General Data Protection Regulation law, and equivalent local legislation, came into force.
The Office of Data Protection Authority (ODPA) is marking the anniversary by releasing new content including its second annual Bijou Lecture, featuring author and lawyer Elizabeth M. Renieris, an expert on data governance and the human rights implications of new and emerging technologies.
This milestone is an opportunity for the ODPA to reflect on what has been achieved in the past five years, to learn from experience and think about ways to grow engagement to create a thriving, safe and inclusive data culture.
Bailiwick of Guernsey Data Protection Commissioner Emma Martins (pictured) commented: “It is important to mark milestones and anniversaries because it gives us an opportunity to pause for a moment and reflect where we have been and where we want to be going as well as remind ourselves of the importance of this issue in all our lives. With the scale and speed of developments lately, these moments of pause have, I think, never been so critical.
“It has been a huge privilege for me to be Commissioner for the Bailiwick during this important chapter in our history; building the foundations for a future that, despite being increasingly dependent upon data, does not lose sight of the need for human values at the core.”
