Doctors at the Medical Specialist Group in Guernsey are starting to use an artificial intelligence tool to help them reduce time spent on paperwork, so they can focus more on patient care.

The smart AI assistant, known as Heidi, helps doctors by taking notes during patient visits and automatically creating documents, such as referral letters and patient summaries, which the doctor checks and signs off.

Heidi was piloted during June by ten consultants and their admin colleagues and is now set to be gradually rolled out for all outpatient consultations.

Patients are given the opportunity to opt out of Heidi being used during their appointment, but only a handful of patients took that option during the pilot.

Dr Farid Fouladinejad, CEO of MSG and a specialist in healthcare technology, said: “Right now, doctors spend around 40% of their time writing and checking notes, letters, and reports. While this work is important, it takes them away from seeing patients. To help change this, MSG is beginning to use AI to support doctors and colleagues with their paperwork.

“Bringing any new tool into healthcare takes care and planning – whether it’s a digital thermometer or a large MRI scanner. There’s a lot of excitement about AI in medicine, but we must be careful and sensible in how we use it. One of the first ways MSG is using AI is to help our doctors in writing up and summarising their notes and letters. This could help them see more patients and reduce waiting times.”

Mr Tom Fysh, consultant breast surgeon at MSG, said: “I’m really looking forward to using this. Every minute I save on paperwork is a minute I can spend with my patients.”

Mr Owen Cole, consultant urologist at MSG, who took part in the pilot, said: “This technology will help me focus better on my patients. Instead of splitting my attention between talking and writing during my clinics, I can give patients my full attention—and that means better care.”

Dr Nick Crabtree, consultant anaesthetist and the lead for clinical safety at MSG, added: “We’ve looked very carefully at how safe and secure this technology is. It meets all national rules for privacy and data protection and is already used in many places around the world. We’re introducing it slowly and carefully. It’s not replacing our colleagues – it’s helping them, like an extra pair of hands in the room.

“This is an important step in our journey at MSG to provide world-class high standards of healthcare in Guernsey. We’re starting small and learning as we go. The AI might not be perfect at first, but it’s already better than the tools we’ve used before. It listens, summarises clearly, and helps us send out notes and letters more quickly and accurately.”
