The new chair of the IoD plans to build on the success of her predecessor by focusing on the next generation of island business leaders.
Alexandra Ruddy (pictured), a chartered accountant, has 25 years’ experience delivering professional services to the financial services industry in Jersey, Alex is a founding director of Oben Law & Regulatory.
Following an application process led by the IoD board in Pall Mall she was voted in as Chair at the Annual Members’ Meeting on 30 May.
Alex is currently a branch ambassador and Chair of the Industry subcommittee, working with a broad spectrum of industry leaders, Ministers and Government officials.
She has worked closely with the outgoing Chair, Natasha Egre, on a number of initiatives and together with the IoD Economic Adviser, Jing Jing Shi, meets regularly with the Minister of Sustainable Economic Development and Chief Economic Adviser to discuss, challenge and collaborate on matters impacting the island economy.
Leading this pivotal committee she has engaged with leaders across all industries standing her in good stead to lead a thriving branch of leaders and future leaders.
Alex said: “Jersey has a thriving business community but it can work more effectively if we break down existing silos and foster collaboration with a shared desire to work together as an island. My experience leading the industry subcommittee has revealed a number of common issues faced by all sectors that, when addressed together as a community, makes for a more powerful voice to drive change and work with decision makers to effect that change.”
The IoD Jersey branch has grown substantially in numbers in recent years, Alex is keen to continue this, saying: “there is a misconception that the IoD is a body solely aimed at senior executives. The future of the IoD and indeed Jersey business is harnessed in the next generation of leaders and they, rightly, need a voice in decisions being made now. I would like to encourage all aspiring leaders to join the IoD, and work with an incredibly committed team, for the benefit of Jersey.”
Acknowledging the contribution of the outgoing Chair, Alex said: “On behalf of the IoD membership, the main committee and subcommittees I would like to thank Natasha for her drive, measured approach to matters and her unwavering support of the IoD. The membership has thrived under her tenure and we have built a collegiate team. I am very much looking forward to building on these sound foundations.”
