The Jersey Care Commission has welcomed Dr Nigel Acheson who has been appointed as Chair by the Minister for the Environment, Deputy Steve Luce.

He succeeds Mr Glenn Houston who served for nearly 8 years as the first Chair of the Commission.

The Commission regulates and inspects services for both adults and children, provided by the Government of Jersey, Parishes, private providers and the voluntary sector to ensure that people receive high quality and safe care.

Nigel Acheson (pictured) has held roles as Regional Medical Director and Higher-Level Responsible Officer for the South Region of NHS England and Deputy Chief Inspector of Hospitals at the Care Quality Commission. The Care Quality Commission is the independent regulator of health and social care in England. In his regulatory roles he worked closely with clinical and leadership teams to support the delivery of continuous improvements in a wide variety of healthcare settings.

Becky Sherrington, Chief Inspector of the Commission, expressed her gratitude, stating: “I would like to thank Glenn Houston for his leadership during the establishment of the Commission and for overseeing the expansion of services we regulate to date. 2025 will be another significant year for the Commission, with plans to regulate government mental health services, ambulance services, and hospitals. We are looking forward to collaborating closely with Dr Acheson and benefiting from his expertise on our Board. We all share the same goal: ensuring that Islanders receive the best possible care outcomes.”

Dr Acheson added: “It has been a pleasure to work with Becky and the wider team at the Commission so far. I am focused on working closely with the service providers to support their hard work in delivering care that meets the standards that have been set. It is an exciting time for care regulation and I look forward to working closely with the team over the coming year.”
