The Medical Specialist Group (MSG) has invested in a cycle to work scheme for its consultants and staff, as part of a commitment to reduce its carbon footprint and encourage healthier lifestyles.
Under the scheme, the MSG makes an interest-free loan for the purchase of a cycle from any cycle store on the island. Staff can also choose to use their annual wellbeing allowance of £300 towards the cost of the cycle, which they can use to travel for work and outside work.
Jon Buckland, MSG chief executive, who himself cycles to work most days, says, “I’m really pleased that we have introduced this scheme for our consultants and staff. Cycling has several health benefits, including improved mental wellbeing by reducing anxiety through exercise. It’s a cost-effective way of travelling to work, and critically it helps to reduce our carbon footprint as an organisation.
“The scheme contributes to our wider wellbeing strategy to improve the health and wellbeing of our people and our commitment to reduce our impact on the environment.”
HR Business Partner Nathan Collenette is one of the first to join up to the scheme. He says, “As someone who likes to be fit and active, I know how important exercise is for my own wellbeing and motivation levels and how it contributes to a productive and successful day at work. And as a member of the HR team, we want the health and wellbeing of our people to be at the core of everything we do.”
Consultant diabetologist Dr Kate Allen adds, “It’s great to find a way to incorporate some exercise into my daily routine while juggling a busy job with a busy home life. Active travel to work has been really good for me and better for the environment too.”
